Is it proper for your waiter to comment on your diet? The other night, Tiny and I had dinner and our waiter said he overheard us talking about WeightWatchers (we both went on WW before her wedding two years ago). He asked us why we would be on WW and told us we didn’t need it. Nice, flattering and all that but is it any of his business?
To top it off, at the end of our meal, he plopped down a huge, free, decadent slab of chocolate cake doused with chocolate sauce and made a remark about WW that I don’t remember now.
He was an A+ waiter — a really nice waiter, too (who also gave us two extra glasses of wine at no charge, incidentally). And while I totally appreciate outstanding service and comps (and am aware that he was likely flirting with us), I felt slightly put off about the WW comments. He doesn’t know our weightloss histories or what unfortunate body image issues we have. And if he actually thought we needed to use WW, would he have given us the free cake?
I don’t know. Like I said, I love getting great waiters who give you free food and drinks, but I just don’t think it’s proper for them to say anything about a weight loss conversation they overheard. We’re two women in California — of course we’re on a diet! What do you think about waiters discuss your weight goals? And also, let’s say you really are on a diet and a waiter brings you free cake out-of-the-blue, how do you react?
